What’s Happening Now
EPA News
2025 Regional/State/Local Modelers Workshop – EPA has announced the date and location for this year’s Regional/State/Local Modelers Workshop (RSL Workshop). This year’s workshop will be July 8-10, 2025 at the Nashville Main Public Library Building in Nashville, TN. *However*, there will not be a “Stakeholder Day” (public session) this year, as the workshop is limited to State/EPA, and other co-regulatory air permitting agencies. After the workshop, slides from all the workshop presentations will be posted to SCRAM.
New Secondary SO2 NAAQS – As we mentioned a few months ago, EPA promulgated a new secondary annual SO2 NAAQS of 10 ppb (~26 µg/m3) back in December 2024. This new annual standard replaced the old 3-hour secondary SO2 NAAQS of 1,300 µg/m3. We noted at the time that interested parties should be on the lookout for any upcoming EPA guidance on this new annual SO2 NAAQS. While it is true that nothing new about the standard has been posted on SCRAM, EPA did release a memo entitled Alternative Demonstration Approach for the 2024 Secondary Sulfur Dioxide National Ambient Air Quality Standard under the Prevention of Significant Deterioration Program, found at the EPA New Source Review (NSR) Permitting web page . That memo can be found here.
In short, EPA states that if an applicant can demonstrate compliance with the 1-hour primary SO2 NAAQS, that should suffice for demonstrating compliance with the new annual secondary SO2 NAAQS. The memo also includes a technical analysis supporting EPA’s policy.

Modeling Tip of the Month
BEEST users know that there are two ways to call/run programs in BEEST: (1) icons:
![]()
Or (2) the Run menu

Although you have known the Run menu as another place where you can run AERMOD, AERMET, etc, we’ve recently added some new items that you can access from it.

In order to invoke the Create Line of Receptors or Create Line of Volume Sources, all you have to do first is draw an Other line on-screen (Show Current Data Graphically), and then click the Run menu and click either Create Line of Receptors or Create Line of Volume Sources. You’ll be prompted to select the Other line, and then BEEST pops up either the line of receptors screen or the line of volume sources screen:

or

Don’t forget, if you’re not sure about how to generate the inputs for the line of volume sources, there’s a Tutorial on it in the BEEST Help menu – Help | Tutorials:

Back at the Run menu, clicking Import KML calls the Import KML utility, which can also be called from the BEEST File | Import | Import | Google Earth Import KML/KMZ menu:

There is also a Tutorial for this tool in BEEST: Help | Tutorials:

Finally, from the Run menu, we can select Unix file to DOS Convert. This utility is helpful when processing raw surface and upper air data through AERMET. Very simply stated, this routine reads in a raw ASCII text file that is in Unix end-of-line format (Line Feed – LF) and converts it to a DOS end-of-line format (Carriage Return Line Feed – CR LF). Selecting Unix file to DOS Convert gives you this easy-to-use pop-up:

Browse to and select the Unix-based end of line file (LF) you want to convert, type in a path/file name for the converted file (CR LF) and then just click Convert.
Providence Training
Modeling skills ready for an upgrade? We can help!
We want to note that many folks use our classes as credit toward professional engineer continuing education requirements. Check with your state’s licensing board or the National Society of Professional Engineers (see here or here) for more information on what is required.
**NSR Essentials**
Providence’s next NSR Essentials air permitting class will be August 18, 2025 and it will be online.
