What’s Happening Now
EPA News
2023 Region/State/Local (RSL) Modelers Workshop – As we mentioned last month, EPA has released the presentations from this year’s RSL workshop. You can find them here.
Speaking of things discussed at the RSL workshop….
*HOT* New version of AERMOD coming soon! – US EPA has announced that the next version of AERMOD will be designated 23132. This palindromic designation will be in honor of Roger Brode, former Mr. AERMOD at EPA, who recently passed away after retiring from the agency in 2021. (Julian Day 132 is May 12, which was Roger’s birthday). EPA has indicated that the release will definitely occur before the 13th Conference on Air Quality Models – hopefully, well before then. As always, as soon as EPA releases a version of AERMOD, we will incorporate it into BEEST ASAP!
13th Conference on Air Quality Models – Save the date! EPA’s triennial Conference on Air Quality Models will be held November 14-15, 2023. This will be a public conference and EPA will be soliciting comments on proposed changes to modeling guidance and tools. As in previous conferences, this one will be held at EPA offices in Research Triangle Park, NC. Keep watching here and on SCRAM for details as they emerge.

Modeling Tip of the Month
A button that’s very handy when displaying concentration outputs in BEEST is the Options button:
Clicking it and going to the General tab, you’ll see 3 display tools at the bottom: Multiply Values by Scaling Factor, Add Background to display values, and Display values above Threshold. We’re going to look at the second one (Add Background to display values).
Did you know that this tool will also allow you to subtract “background” from values? Consider a case where you ran AERMOD and included a true background value to be included in the run. This is a single “annual” value that gets added to every hour of the year and shows up as part of the ALL source group. If you want to know what your concentration field/display looks like without the true background, click Display Output Graphically, go to Options | General, check Add Background to display values and input the negative of the true background. Your ALL concentrations will then have the true background value subtracted from the ALL concentrations. Here’s an example where the BEEST Test Case was loaded and run for 1-hour SO2. An “annual” background of 22.5 µg/m3 was included. Here’s what ALL output looks like:
Now, if I click Options | General, and input -22.5 in Add Background to display values, it looks like this:
And my concentration display now looks like this:
