2021 RSL Workshop – EPA held this year’s virtual Regional, State and Local Dispersion Modelers’ Workshop on June 21-23, 2021. The Workshop was open to industry and external stakeholders on June 21. EPA will be posting the presentations from the June 21 session on SCRAM in July.

New AERMOD / AERMET / AERSCREEN – EPA has released new versions of the AERMOD modeling system. It is referred to as v21112 (gotta love those version palindromes – 18081, 19191, now 21112). AERMOD, AERMET and AERSCREEN were updated with bug fixes and some enhancements. This does not include any updates to AERSURFACE or AERMINUTE. As always, when EPA releases updates to any of the AERMOD system component programs, we update BEEST Suite to include the changes. For more information on this EPA release, go to SCRAM.

*HOT* Bugs found in AERMOD 21112 – EPA recently announced that they have confirmed the existence of two bugs in AERMOD 21112. The first is related to cases where the user invokes the Tier 3 Plume Volume Molar Ratio Method (PVMRM) for estimating NO2 impacts from NOX emissions. In this case, the background concentrations of NO2 provided via the AERMOD input file are added to the intermediate modeled concentrations twice, resulting in final modeled concentrations that are too high. When using the PVMRM option to model NO2, users should input background concentrations of NO2 that are one-half of the actual background concentrations.

The second bug is related to the use of the buoyant line (BUOYLINE) source in AERMOD. EPA notes that AERMOD will complete processing without an error but concentrations for BUOYLINE source types will not be generated or reported as zero. This can occur when one or more BUOYLINE sources are defined and the required BLPINPUT keyword is omitted, as well as the BLPGROUP keyword (not required in all circumstances). When all BUOYLINE source types defined in the input file are considered part of a single BLPGROUP, the BLPGROUP keyword is not required, and the BLPGrpID is an optional parameter for the BLPINPUT keyword. However, the BLPINPUT keyword is required. If the BLPINPUT keyword is also omitted, AERMOD will appear to complete successfully, but concentrations will not be generated for the BUOYLINE source types since the BUOYLINE source characteristics have not been specified via the BLPINPUT keyword and parameters. When modeling BUOYLINE source types, EPA recommends that the user include the BLPGrpID with the BLPINPUT keyword even when all BUOYLINE source types are modeled as a single BLPGROUP and assign each BUOYLINE source type to a BLPGROUP via the BLPGrpID parameter with the BLPGROUP keyword. Note: the updates to BUOYLINE sources are not incorporated in BEEST 12.06 but will be incorporated in BEEST 12.07.

Model Clearinghouse Memo – The EPA Modeling Clearinghouse (MCH) released a concurrence memo regarding a stack-specific alternative modeling approach for applying downwash in AERMOD for a pulp and paper mill in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. You can read the memo here.

AerScreen for Windows

AerScreen for Windows 4.02 is now out! This update has the following enhancements:

  • Includes AERSCREEN 21112 and AERMOD 21112
  • The Adjust U* option has been enabled by default
  • The website for downloading terrain data files has been updated
  • The user manual for Terrain Files Converter has been updated

Professional CalPuff

Our most recent version of Professional CalPuff (4.00) was released August 26, 2016 and is available to all registered users with current maintenance.

AERMOD Wizard 1.05 is now out! This update has the following enhancements:

  • Allows you to download EPA ambient monitoring data published in November 2020
  • Allows you to download and process monitoring data for lead (Pb)
  • Can now calculate 8-hour average concentrations for ozone
  • Includes 6-day collection frequency for PM2.5


In addition, AerMet within AERMOD Wizard has also been updated:

  • Improved “AerSurface Input Files” form
  • Fixed bug in writing wind sectors to AERMET input files when the Multiple option is selected and twelve wind sectors are entered on the “MP 2” tab
