EPA News

The EPA Model Clearinghouse recently issued a pair of Concurrence Memoranda regarding the use of AERCOARE-AERMOD as an alternative model for an Outer Continental Shelf permitting effort. For more information, go to:

https://cfpub.epa.gov/oarweb/MCHISRS/index.cfm?fuseaction=main.resultdetails&recnum=22-III-01
https://cfpub.epa.gov/oarweb/MCHISRS/index.cfm?fuseaction=main.resultdetails&recnum=22-I-03

If you’re keeping score, that makes seven (7) cases where EPA has approved the use of AERCOARE-AERMOD as an alternative model.

Not much else is going on in the EPA world this month, but this is a heads-up that EPA’s triennial Conference on Air Quality Models will be coming up in 2023. Keep watching here and on SCRAM for details.

Modeling Tip of the Month

It is truly amazing what all can be done with our AERMOD Wizard software. Modelers appreciate the ability to identify, download, and process meteorological and ambient data, but it can also perform a task that combines meteorological and ambient data. That task is known as a pollutant rose or pollution rose. Combining ambient data with wind direction data enables a forensic analysis to determine what emission source or sources may be impacting a monitoring station. With AERMOD Wizard, this is very easy to do. First, open AERMOD Wizard and select your pollutant of interest, monitor of interest, and closest surface meteorological station.

Download the surface meteorological data and ambient data – both have to be for the same time period/year. For this example, we are looking at SO2 for 2018 for a station in east Texas. Click the met station’s icon, which will put a circle around it.

If you right-click the ambient monitoring station, you get a menu with the option to Show Pollutant Rose.

Clicking Show Pollutant Rose will open a form to set up your pollutant rose. For the three dropdowns at the top of the form, make sure that you have the correct year, surface meteorological station, and offset from GMT selected.

You can opt to distribute calms/missing data and define the upper bounds of your pollutant classes, as well as pick either wind direction or flow vector. If you wish to have the rose petals point back toward any culpable sources, you’ll want to select wind direction. Click Calc Frequencies and AERMOD Wizard will calculate the concentration class frequencies based on your inputs. Rather than using the default upper bounds, you may wish to pare these back in order to better display the concentration petals.

Clicking Pollution Rose will then create your pollution rose that pairs the surface meteorological data with the ambient data. After doing so, you can also export the pollution rose to Google Earth.

In this example, the SO2 pollution rose points back to a large coal-fired power plant.

We want to note that many folks use our classes as credit toward professional engineer continuing education requirements. Check with your state’s licensing board or the National Society of Professional Engineers (see here or here) for more information on what is required.
