What’s Happening Now

New Surface Meteorological Data Format

The National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) stopped uploading Integrated Surface Hourly Dataset (ISHD) surface meteorological data as of August 29, 2025. The new surface meteorological data format is referred to as Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN) and can be found at https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/global-historical-climatology-network-hourly. For those of you who process meteorological data via the AERMET system, it is important to note that the current version of AERMET (v24142) is NOT able to read/incorporate GHCN data. EPA is currently working to add this capability to AERMET. This update will not happen until EPA releases its 2026 AERMOD system update (AERMOD, AERMET, AERMAP, and AERSURFACE) – possibly mid-late spring of 2026.  When EPA does release it, we will incorporate it into our AERMET graphical user interface (GUI) ASAP.

*HOT* In the meantime, we are creating a utility that will convert GHCN surface data into ISHD format. Watch this space for more information!

EPA News

Not much going on in the EPA world, but…

EPA has released 3 years (2021-2023) of hourly prognostic outputs from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. These data are at 12 km x 12 km grid cell size resolution, covering the continental US. With this data, users can load the data into the Mesoscale Model InterFace (MMIF) program to generate meteorological inputs for AERMET and AERMOD. Click here to learn more about the data and click here to learn more about/download MMIF.

If you have suggestions for an enhancement to any of our modeling software products, please let us know and we’ll do our best to incorporate it into the software ASAP!

Modeling Tip of the Month

One of the nice options in AERMOD Wizard is the ability to display EPA National Emissions Inventory (NEI) sites and data on-screen. Once you have AERMOD Wizard open, go to the selection buttons on the left-hand side and select NEI Sources:

You also have the option to change how the sources’ labels are displayed on-screen. It can be one of six different ways:

• No label (just a marker for the location)
• Just the letters “NEI” for each source
• A pipe (|) for each source
• Each source’s Emissions Inventory System (EIS) ID
• The first ten letters of the source’s name, or
• Display the NEI source’s emissions (in TPY) above a threshold of 0.01 tpy

To access how the source labels are displayed, click the Options button on the left-hand side:

Then, go to the far-right tab, called NEI Sources:

Here, you can select which of the six label display options you want to use. If you opt for the last one (Display the NEI source’s emissions (in TPY) above a threshold of 0.01 tpy), AERMOD Wizard can change the display depending on what pollutant you select on the left-hand side of the screen. Here’s the display for carbon monoxide:

You can click the drop-down arrow on the left to show NOX emissions at the same sites:

And finally, if you want to get a summary of all criteria pollutant emissions at each site, simply hover your cursor over the icon/point and then you’ll see a yellow pop-up appear.

When it appears, right click at the icon, and select NEI Source Data

AERMOD Wizard will then display a summary of all criteria pollutant emissions for that site:
