Modeling Tip of the Month
We do quite a bit of meteorological data processing for AERMOD and wanted to share an interesting tidbit of information related to that. If you process raw meteorological data through AERMET, you know that it can process multiple formats of raw data, including CD-144, SAMSON, HUSWO, and Integrated Surface Hourly Data (ISHD). ISHD is the most recently created format and began in 1995. Unlike predecessor formats, ISHD data are time stamped in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). This means that there is a difference between the ISHD data time stamp and local standard time. For example, ISHD data for a station located in the US Eastern time zone are 5 hours behind the GMT time stamp. This time offset requires you to not only account for this difference (called Time Adjust in our AerMet GUI) but to also append the first day of the next year’s raw ISHD data to your raw surface data file. This is because AERMET reads the records based on the offset; if you don’t include January 1 of the next year, your last 5, 6, 7, or 8 hours of processed data (based on Eastern, Central, Mountain, or Pacific Standard Time) will show as missing hours.
Bonus tip: for meteorological data processing, everything is based on local standard time. Daylight saving time is never used or accounted for.

BeestXpress users have some great system enhancements to work with:
- The “Job Details” webpage now displays the pollutant being modeled
- The “Job Details” webpage now displays run progress for MAXDCONT calculations
- Modeling runs with multiple partitions now include a combined AERMOD input file (*.DTA) in the output .ZIP file
- Added an option to the “Submit Job” webpage that affects modeling runs with multiple partitions: the intermediate output files created by each partition can be omitted from the output .ZIP file
- The “Job Search” webpage now includes the option to search by project number
- Users have access to up to 99 partitions per AERMOD run
To date, BeestXpress has processed over 500,000 AERMOD runs.
BeestXpress users can log on at www.beestxpress.com to take advantage of our AERMOD “force multiplier”. That AERMOD run that might have taken a day or two to process on your desktop computer can finish in an hour or less on BeestXpress. When time is money, BeestXpress is the best modeling return on investment there is!
